B.A.A 5k 2018

I raced my 3rd BAA 5k this past weekend as my shake out for the Big Day.
I needed this run after a hard two week of Taper Crazies.
It was a perfect morning. Blue skies, crisp temps.
The Heartbreakers were out in force.
I ran with my friend Rachel.
Nice and easy.
Only a few peaks at my watch (which Rachel yelled at me for!).
30:41. Negative splits. Perfect feel.
I managed to not be too emotional down Boylston.
Smile on my face.
Ready for the Marathon!

G.R.F. Thoughts on Marathon Training

Well.
Today is the day.
The day I make my way from Hopkinton to Boston.
Today is Boston's party. My victory lap after 20 weeks of training.
Hundreds of miles.
Cold runs. Hard runs. Fun runs.
Runs that made me question my sanity.
Runs that made me feel on top of the world.
I've run through a knee injury.
Stretching. PT.
Icing. Taping.
Three years ago this was a mere dream.
I was a spectator.
Now I am a runner.
Now I am running Boston.
I've run this city.
My city.
My Boston.
Forward Together.
This is Boston.
Boston Strong.
Come this afternoon, if all goes well, I will be a marathoner.
I will be a BOSTON MARATHONER.
I am ready.
This is my celebration.
Run my race.
Toe the line in Hopkinton.
Ashland. Framingham. Natick. Wellesley. Newton. Brookline.
Right on Hereford, left on Boylston.
Finish strong.

Ellis Island

Before we headed over to the Statue of Liberty we first ferried over to Ellis Island. I'd been there more recently, but not since I taught a social studies unit on immigration; so I was rather excited to visit with my new knowledge about this historical site.
The Registration Room is such a stunning space. But knowing how many people were stuck in there, standing on line, for hour and hours makes it a touch harder to stomach the beauty. I was able to tell mom how inspectors would watch people come up the stairs, looking for any ailments that could prevent them from gaining immediate entry.
There was a special exhibit of photographs from the other side of the island. Much of which is still abandoned. It was haunting to see photos of the isolation wards decaying and desolate. There was also a great piece on what people found when they first began to explore the island in the 60s before it was rehabbed into the museum.
Every trip to Ellis Island is powerful. Our family didn't come through Ellis Island, but knowing the trip others made for a start at a new life is special and humbling to think about.
